A British photographer’s images of East London Gypsies acts as a reminder that the best stories aren’t always found on the other side of the world

I was just researching some caption information for the January issue’s reviews section when I came across the website of British photographer Kate Eshelby .

Not only was I drawn to the rich filmic textures and colours of the images (so refreshing and emotionally engaging in the current sea of digital images), but I was also intrigued by some of the subjects she’s covered, including a series of images showing Gypsies in East London who’ve been re-housed to make way for the 2012 Olympics.

It just reminded me that, although our features cover countries and cultures all over the world, sometimes the most interesting stories are happening just down the road, right under our noses, in the cities where we live.
