Afghanistan uncovered

Currently showing at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) headquarters in London, From Kabul to Kandahar: 1833–1933 is an exhibition of photographs, drawings and lithographs illustrating life in Afghanistan during the era of the Great Game, when Tsarist Russia and Britain were battling for control of Central Asia. The images in the exhibition are mostly drawn from four albums of photographs compiled by British soldiers and are accompanied by extracts from historic travel journals and maps. Mainly commissioned for military and strategic purposes, the following images, which have been drawn from the exhibition, provide an intriguing glimpse into Afghanistan as it began the slow move towards independence
