Information for potential contributors

Geographical, the official magazine of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), has been published continuously since 1935. Each month, Geographical brings the world into its readers’ living rooms, highlighting the rich diversity of the world’s cultures, wildlife and places. Geographical also provides an authoritative voice on the important social and environmental issues that face humanity, educating and informing its readers. Employing inspiring photography and exclusive in-depth editorial features, Geographical offers a unique blend of:
• People and cultures • The natural world
• Exploration and discovery • Environmental issues
• Responsible travel • The best of Britain
• Science and technology • Outdoor-equipment advice
Article proposals
Geographical publishes articles by professional writers and journalists and, on occasion, professionals working within geography-related fields. The magazine receives a great many proposals on a weekly basis, and it isn’t always possible for the editors to respond to every proposal on a personal and individual basis.
Feature proposals should be sent to proposals@geographical.co.uk, comprising a 150–200-word synopsis of the article you intend to write for Geographical and a selection of about 10-15 low-res images. Please have a good look at previous issues or at our website to gain an insight into suitable topics for publication.
Please note:
• We do not include journey or expedition accounts unless they are being undertaken for research purposes and/or are of exceptional interest
• We have a policy of not commissioning authors before they go on trips (for financial and legal reasons), but would be happy to discuss the suitability for publication of your proposed story and any specific needs we might have before you leave, and/or to hear from you on your return, when you will have a much more focused proposal (or even, ideally, a draft and sample photography)
Photography
We don’t commission photographers to undertake work on our behalf, nor do we use stock images from individual photographers very often (agencies or libraries tend to satisfy our needs). But, we are happy to receive proposals for our photo essay section from professional photographers. Please send proposals with a low-res image selection or a link to an online gallery to proposals@geographical.co.uk .
Please note:
• We are only interested in receiving tightly focused photo sets that have a clearly defined theme and some sort of narrative coherence – a collection of shots of a place or people isn’t sufficient. View previous photo essays here
Books for review
Please send an email with information about the book to the Reviews Editor, Olivia Edward, on olivia@geographical.co.uk. If she thinks the book might be suitable for review she will ask for a review copy. Please don't send in unsolicited books or proofs.
Letters to the Editor
Should be mailed to the editorial address shown here, or emailed to geordie@geographical.co.uk. Please write LETTERS PAGE in the subject box and include your address.
Please note: Geographical cannot guarantee a response to unsolicited work, but every effort will be made to respond. Neither can it take responsibility for submissions, but will take all reasonable care of material in its possession. And please, DO NOT sent unsolicited photographic material
