Vatican looks to heavenly body for power

The Vatican City, headquarters of the Roman Catholic church, is doing its bit for the environment
The world’s smallest sovereign state, the Vatican City, headquarters of the Catholic Church, is doing its bit for the environment.

Pope Benedict XVI has just approved a €2.5million (£1.7million) plan to replace 4,800 weathered tiles on the Paul VI hall with photovoltaic panels.

One of the more modern buildings within the confines of the Vatican City, the hall can accommodate 10,000 people and is traditionally used to host public meetings in bad weather.

Once in place, the panels, which are due to be commissioned in the first half of next year, will supply the hall with more than enough energy to run it.
