Photographer Nick Hall travels to Bristol Bay in Alaska, where the indigenous population’s traditional – and lucrative – salmon fisheries are under threat from proposals to build a huge opencast mine
Every year, around 31 million salmon return to the rivers and lakes of Bristol Bay, making it the largest wild salmon run left in the world. For as long as anyone can remember, the local Alaskans have taken advantage of this plentiful supply of food by setting up an annual summer fishing camp, but now their ancient way of life is being threatened by a plan to build the USA’s largest opencast mine nearby
